Zong started as Paktel by Cable & Wireless in 1991, the pioneer with a free license for cellular services in Pakistan. Initially, it offered AMPS services, transitioning to GSM in 2004. In 2003, Millicom Corporation acquired Paktel from Cable & Wireless. By January 2007, Millicom International Cellular S.A. planned to sell its Paktel stake to China Mobile, marking a significant shift in Paktel's ownership.
In May 2007, Paktel Limited became China Mobile Pakistan. China Mobile increased its stake in CMPak in the same month. On April 1, 2008, Paktel transformed into Zong.
